D12: Devil's Night (2001)

4.5 star debut from D12

Eminem and his 5 man crew from Detroit bring you a very solid debut album when many said it wouldn't or couldn't happen. He shows his crew just ain't his boys but they got skills as well, not to mentionlyrics that are as off the wall and controversial as Slim's. With 15 songs you get a good showing of all the members. Em is on 14 of the songs, Proof (R.I.P.) is on 9, Bizarre is on 11, Kon Artis is on 13, Kuniva & Swifty are on 12. Of the 15 songs 2 are classics, 1 is almost a classic, 1 I skip, 3 are ok, and the rest are good or great songs. Production is tight. Eminem does 8 songs, Dr. Dre does 4, and Kon Artis does 3. A nice album to have for fans of D12 or Slim Shady.

2pac: Until The End Of Time (2001)

The fourth album released in the wake of 2Pac's 1996 death, Until the End of Time certainly offers plenty of music, two discs' worth to be precise, although the songs here seem overdone, which can obscure 2Pac's performances. Nevertheless, those performances somehow remain remarkable no matter how deep into the vault Afeni Shakur and Suge Knight have dug, and songs like "Letter 2 My Unborn," "When Thugz Cry," and the title track are just as heartfelt as "Keep Ya Head Up," "Dear Mama," and "I Ain't Mad at Cha" had been. The title track is one of 2Pac's most desperate, spirited performances ever -- the voice of a man face to face with his own fate -- and it's accompanied by an anxious yet lulling interpolation of Mr. Mister's 1985 pop hit "Broken Wings" that is far more affective than you'd imagine. Note that there are two versions here of the title track (the best one being the original one, which features RL on the hook), as there are also two versions of a few other songs, and these remixes are nearly interchangeable.
